Polewali Mandar, West Sulawesi

Sandeq is a traditional boat from the Mandar people, one of the oldest ethnic groups throughout Austronesia. As proud icon of West Sulawesi and regarded as the world’s fastest boat with no machine, sandeq can sail for 20 to 30 knots (50 km/hour). It is originally used for trading and exploring the archipelago.

Sandeq Race Festival celebrates this prideful notion; it is a tribute to the high spirits of Mandar people’s ancestors. The race is truly unique, as you will witness barefoot fishermen on bamboo outrigger canoes, without any technology, engine, or navigation radar, try to outrun each other. Prepare to be blown away by the craziest regatta
in Indonesia.
